Spironolactone is a drug marketed under the trade names Novo- Spiroton, Aldactone, Aldactazide, Spiractine, Spirotone or Verospiron. It is an artificial lactone drug as well as a diuretic. It is part of a group of drugs that are classified as anti- androgens. Androgens are hormones present in both males and females unlike testosterones that are male hormones. In the female body, it is present in lower levels but there are some women who produce more androgen hormones than needed in the body.
Spironolactone blocks androgen receptors in the body thus, preventing androgen hormones to be absorbed by the cells since it is an anti-androgen. The drug reduces fluctuations of the hormones that can lead to acne breakouts because androgen hormones are associated with the development of acne. It works well in women whose acne has a hormonal basis. Studies show that more than sixty percent of the women who take the drug show perfect improvement and some have their skin clear completely. Excellent results are got when the drug is used together with oral contraceptives because, according to the study, the number jumps to more than eighty five percent. For acne treatment, the dosage should be between fifty and a hundred milligrams daily.
Spironolactone removes excess body fluids in case of kidney disease, heart failure and liver cirrhosis. It can also be used together with other drugs to treat elevated blood pressure as well as hypokalemia. It reduces the effects of too much adrenal aldosterone production which is known as hyperaldosteronism. Excess aldosterone may be caused by a tumor in the adrenal gland or enlargement of the adrenal glands, a condition called hyperplasia. The drug can be taken with or without food and the dosage ranges between twenty five to four hundred milligrams daily. It lowers the sodium levels in the blood as well as raises potassium levels. Very high potassium levels in the blood can be dangerous and so, it should not be administered with agents that raise potassium levels in the blood.
Spironolactone can be dangerous in treating high blood pressure during pregnancy. Mothers should not breastfeed the baby while taking the drug to avoid adverse effects in the baby because the breast milk secretes an active metabolite of this drug. Higher doses cause many side effects as compared to the lower doses. Breast tenderness and irregular menstrual cycle are the common side effects that occur in many women. There are also other limited side effects such as dry mouth, stomach cramps with diarrhea or vomiting, headache and dizziness. For those with kidney problems, breast cancer and uterine cancer, this drug is not the best choice for them.
Spironolactone can cause adverse side effects if the patient is an alcoholic, so, alcohol should be avoided as much as possible. For those taking the drug, diets with a lot of salt should also be avoided because too much salt makes the body retain water thus, making the medication become less effective. Avoid dehydrating during exercises or in hot weather. You should always follow the doctor’s instructions on the amounts of liquids that should be taken in.
Despite my nervousness about taking a medication long-term, I decided to take spironolactone, and for the last 6 months, it has been super. Besides having to run to the restroom every 30 min (my coworkers swore I was pregnant), it's been great, and the intake in water has been good daily routine. Between the pill and Weight Watchers, I've lost roughly 15 lbs, and I feel very good. My hair is starting to grow back and I can visually see results, even with my fine hair. Although facial hair continues to be an issue, it's no longer a daily-maintenance thing. I do feel sleepy a lot earlier in the evenings lately, but that could be seasonal too.
I started taking 50mg/day, but after a few months increased to 100mg/day (4x25mg). I'm also taking the contraceptive pill. I have suffered from bad acne for over 10 years and have tried almost every medication with no success. Roaccutane did work, but when I stopped taking it my acne came back. The results for my acne with Spironolactone have been amazing...it's a miracle and has changed my life. It took a few months for my skin to completely clear. I have been told I should take it for 18 months to 2 years and then wean myself off it. It's almost that time and I am very worried about stopping it and my acne coming back.
I love this drug! My advice is to stick with it ... I was on it before and gave up because I didn't see any improvement. I gave it a second try and have stuck with it and am very pleased! Hang in there, women!
I love this medication. It has worked great for me as acne treatment. I have no more acne, and I have lost almost 10 pounds. There are no side effects but there has been no change in the hair growth.
i got huge bald patch which was getting bigger after taking Loestrin for 1 year , after taking Spironol+yasmin my hair finally started to grow back! i don't have acne as well, So far it does only good for me!
